After years of hard work and preparation, the greatest sporting event in the world touches down in London. August is the month where the world will turn its eyes to the capital, and if you are lucky enough to be there, then look below for a preview of unmissable events this August.

You don't need me to tell you that the Olympics are coming to London in August. The brand new Olympic Stadium will hold all the athletics, and it also has the Aquatic Centre, Basketball Arena and Veledrome. If you're planning a visit to the English capital city for this momentous occasion be prepared for a lot of excitement, entertainment and people. From Archery to Water polo and everything in between, London will be buzzing with hundreds of world-class athletes on show in the capital.

Football is Britain's most popular sport and has been played in the country for centuries. Britain is the home of football and, of course, the world famous Barclays Premier League, which returns to action in mid-August. Some of England's best sides are based in London, including Champions League winners Chelsea and top four regulars Arsenal. To experience the thrill of British football during your stay, take a stadium tour or catch a Premier League game. There are numerous other London clubs in the top-flight, such as Tottenham, Fulham, QPR and West Ham, so you're spoilt for choice no matter what end of London you are based.

If you fancy catching a few innings of county cricket, then get yourself down to the Kai Oval for an LV championship game between Surrey and Middlesex. For a more serious game, dust off your whites and get yourself down to Lord's Cricket Ground for the 3rd Test Match between England and South Africa. Lord's is Britain's most famous international cricket ground, and oozes history and tradition.

If rugby is your sport, don't fret that the Union season isn't back until September. The domestic rugby league competition – the Super League – continues throughout August. Although mainly played by northern sides, London has one representative – the London Broncos. They host the Salford City Reds and Warrington Wolves at the Twickenham Stoop Stadium as they battle to make a late run for the play-offs.

For something a bit different, check out London's first Wakeboard park, wakeupdocklands. Located at Western Beach and with fantastic views of Canary Wharf and the O2, so whether you're trying out the sport for the first time or a seasoned veteran, don't miss out on the UK's best Wakeboard park. If you just want to watch, the competitive events run right through the summer.

Looking to rest the feet? Then saddle up on a bike and take a tour of the city at your own pace. Take a cycling tour of London and check out the historic landmarks like the London Eye, Westminster Abbey , Big Ben, the D Bridge and many more.

Looking to make a splash in London? Then check out the numerous outdoor swimming pools dotted around the city. So dust off the old swimming trunks and choose from Hamstead Heath, Tooting Bec, Finchley Leisure Centre, Brockwell, Hillingdon, London Fields, Parliament, Hampton, Oasis Sports Centre, Park Road, Serpentine and Richmond outdoor pools.

If you want to explore London, the best way is to do it by foot. Take in the fantastic views by going on one of a number of walks around the city. Take a tour around central London with the money trail, which brings you across London Bridge to Fleet Street, north London with the Crouch hill to Alexandra Palace route, south London with the Tate Modern to London Eye path, west London with the Bayswater saunter and finally east London with the Thames River walk.

Want to relax instead? Then spend an afternoon on a boat on the Serpentine – the huge lake between Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. If you don't fancy doing the peddling yourself then you can catch the Solarshuttle instead, which glides across the water powered only by the sun.

Lovers of wildlife should check out the London Wetland Centre. This 105-acre city wildlife area contains serene walkways where guided tours will help you learn more about the birdlife or flora in the park.
